What is FIRST? | “The varsity Sport for the Mind,” FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to “real-world engineering” as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
“The opportunities that are given through participation in FIRST are not just opportunities to build a robot, join a team, and compete in what is most likely the biggest STEM olympiad on the planet, these kids are also getting the opportunity to be good at something. They don’t just build robots. They run their teams as a business. They create business plans, fundraising strategies, websites, marketing plans and materials, and logos. They come up with travel and lodging, create and complete task lists, reach deadlines, and communicate with each other on every detail throughout the season.”
