FIRST Louisiana-Mississippi are beyond grateful to our sponsors and supporters! Today, we are showcasing Laitram and Intralox for their continuous support to the FIRST program and investment in the future of STEM.
Similar to FIRST, Laitram was founded by an avid inventor and engineer. Laitram is committed to continuous improvement and understands that by investing in STEM education they can help foster the next great idea. One of their many endeavors to invest in the future has been their active involvement with FIRST Robotics. For the past seventeen years, Laitram has been an integral supporter of FIRST Louisiana-Mississippi through major contributions of volunteers, mentors, and financial support.
“As with many great causes, there was a connection between the two organizations. An Intralox engineer, Warren Cancienne, has been involved with FIRST for a number of years and has been instrumental in driving involvement by both the company and our employees.
Without Warren’s continued advocacy for FIRST, we would not be where we are today.”
-Franck Labiche, Laitram Human Resources Director
Major Impact: Without financial support there would not be FIRST events.
In the beginning, Laitram began their journey with FIRST by making annual donations to FIRST Louisiana-Mississippi, formerly BLAST, with the intent on assisting the FIRST LEGO League State Tournament and FIRST Robotics Bayou Regional.
Major Impact: FIRST works because of the volunteers. Most people lose sight of the fact that the events are run by volunteers that spent months of planning, organizing and recruiting to pull off a successful event.
Shortly after, Laitram and Intralox took their endowment a step further by providing volunteers annually to both the FIRST LEGO League State Tournament and FIRST Robotics Competition Bayou Regional. These volunteers served as judges across all parts of the competition, dedicating multiple days and weekends to serving these aspiring engineers, scientists, and leaders.
Major Impact: Design possibilities are endless. Providing more design options sparks creativity and engagement.
Starting in 2011 Intralox has been offering local teams
Intralox belt kits, one of their many
engineering products, to use on their robots at no charge to the team. These
kits are used in many industries worldwide including baking, tire, packaging,
and industrial design. Not only are the students being provided free resources
to expand and fuel their designs, but they are obtaining hands-on experience
with real world engineering applications.
Major Impact: Mentoring is an integral part of carrying out the mission of FIRST by exposing the kids to “real world” engineers & professionals.
Starting in 2016, Laitram committed to supporting the local STEM initiatives. One of the STEM programs selected was to recruit mentors for the local FIRST Technical Challenge (FTC) & FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) robotics teams. For the past three years, an on-site recruiting event has been held to showcase the importance and need for mentors.
For the 2019 season, 21 mentors were recruited to support 13 teams. In addition to mentor support, each team with an employee mentor received a $2000 donation totaling in $26,000 for 2019.
Laitram hopes to continue building their successful partnership with FIRST by expanding their mentorship and financial support. We are eternally grateful for their generosity and look forward to continuing this great partnership!
